當(dāng)今一些常見的中小尺度天氣現(xiàn)象，如暴風(fēng)雨、閃電、強(qiáng)降雨、霧、冰凍及邊界層紊流等，在短時(shí)間內(nèi)生成或消散，可能只是地區(qū)性的，但危害性較大。由于缺乏可靠及時(shí)的觀測資料，導(dǎo)致預(yù)報(bào)極其困難。而目前采用的觀測手段均具局限性，比如探空氣球和飛機(jī)，會受到較大的時(shí)間和空間限制；天氣雷達(dá)資料在無降水時(shí)的欠缺；在離地面5公里范圍內(nèi)衛(wèi)星遙感數(shù)據(jù)存在較大的誤差等。由Radiometrics公司最新推出的35通道地基微波輻射計(jì)正好彌補(bǔ)了這些缺陷：提供了高度達(dá)10公里的時(shí)間上連續(xù)的溫度、相對濕度和液態(tài)水廓線數(shù)據(jù)，它們與連續(xù)的風(fēng)廓線資料一起，為臨近、短期天氣精準(zhǔn)預(yù)報(bào)所必需。
