In the United States of America there are tragedies that happen so frequently that many people fail to notice the impact they are having on our nation and have become immune to suffering they cause. These ignored tragedies are happening every day on our nation’s highways, urban streets and country roads and are the direct result of aggressive driving. Every year approximately 37,000 of our countries men and women die needlessly in traffic accidents.
Over 600,000 Americans died on our nation’s roadways. As terribly tragic as these numbers are, they only tell part of the story. The other part is the toll that traffic accidents take injuring millions of Americans every year.
In a 17 year period, 34 million Americans were injured in traffic accidents. This shows that, in total, traffic accidents tragically and dramatically affects the lives of over 2 million Americans ever year. How do these accidents affect our communities and economy? The United States Federal Highway Administration calculates that traffic accidents have a negative financial impact on our communities of $630 million every day or the $230 billion every year. This is money that could be used to take care of families, start business or go to schools or charities. It is painfully clear that traffic accidents are a national tragedy that is stealing our precious resources. This begs the question what are the reasons we have to sacrifice so much of ourselves on the roadways? There are many reasons for the traffic accidents. One of the most significant reasons and ironically one of the most preventable is aggressive drivers. Aggressive drivers are those who routinely violate the traffic laws by demonstrating behaviors such as speeding or running red lights.
